Answers to Common Questions About Breastfeeding Support and IBCLC Services

What is an IBCLC?

An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is a globally recognised healthcare professional who has achieved the highest level of expertise in breastfeeding and lactation support

Only individuals who have met rigorous certification standards and remain currently credentialed are permitted to use the protected title of IBCLC. It is considered the gold standard in lactation care worldwide

IBCLCs like Debbie:

  • Are certified by passing a comprehensive international examination

  • Must recertify every five years through further education or re-examination

  • Possess deep knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and psychology of breastfeeding

  • Are trained to support both simple and complex lactation challenges

  • Provide care to both parent and baby as a connected, interrelated unit

  • Tailor their support to align with each family’s unique breastfeeding goals

Many families are surprised to hear what IBCLCs are required to know and have experience with.

You can read more about the IBCLC Scope of Practice and Clinical Competencies on the official IBLCE website:

Do I need a referral to see Debbie?

No referral is needed. No breastfeeding question or issue is too big or too small.

You can book directly with Debbie for any of her services including the antenatal course, lactation consultations,

baby massage or hire a breast pump or purchase a breast pump

When should I book a lactation consultation?

It’s never too early or too late. Debbie works with families:

  • Before baby arrives is most valuable (via the online antenatal breastfeeding course)

  • Soon after birth to ensure breastfeeding is off to a smooth start

  • At any time during the entire breastfeeding journey

Priority is given to newborns with urgent feeding challenges.

Debbie will always aim to provide some interim support if a consultation can’t be arranged straight away.

Where are consultations held?

Debbie offers flexible consultation options:

  • In-home visits within Dubbo and surrounding areas (travel fees apply outside Dubbo)

  • In-person appointments at her Dubbo-based location (if preferred)

  • Virtual consultations via phone or Zoom

What if I’m feeling overwhelmed or unsure?

That’s completely normal—and one of the most common reasons parents seek Debbie’s support. Newborn life can bring unexpected challenges, especially when advice from multiple sources becomes confusing. Debbie offers gentle, evidence-based support to help you feel more confident and in control.

Can Debbie help with low milk supply or sore nipples?

Yes. These are some of the most common issues Debbie helps with. She also works with families experiencing:

  • Painful attachment

  • Concerns about the baby’s weight gain

  • Feeding challenges in sleepy or unsettled babies

  • Mixed feeding

  • Return-to-work planning and pumping routines

  • Feeding breastmilk to breastfed babies

  • Feelings of anxiety and overwhelm from receiving conflicting and varied suggestions/advice from multiple sources

Are services eligible for private health rebates?

Some private health insurers may offer rebates for lactation services provided by an IBCLC, which include lactation consultations, antenatal classes, breast pump hire, and pump purchases. You will receive an itemised health fund compliant receipt upon payment. Debbie encourages clients to check directly with their fund to see what might apply to their specific policy.

Can I book a breastfeeding consultation and baby massage together?

Yes, Debbie offers bundled packages that include antenatal education, postnatal consultations, follow-ups, and baby massage. These offer value and continuity of care across your journey. Visit the Packages page for more details or contact Debbie directly.

What kind of breast pump should I use?

Not everyone needs a breast pump. It usually comes down to a professional recommendation (in certain breastfeeding situations) or a personal preference. Debbie stocks Spectra hospital-grade electric pumps for hire or purchase and can guide you in selecting the most suitable option for your situation if needed or wished. For more information see breast pump page
