Why Hospital Grade Matters

Breast pumps are not all created equal. While many small personal use pumps are widely available in retail shops and are very popular for convenience, their overall pump design and motors may not always meet the demands of more complex feeding situations.

Debbie suggests getting a comprehensive breastfeeding assessment to firstly determine if a breast pump would be helpful in your situation.

A hospital grade breast pump would most likely be recommended when:

  • Mum is establishing or maintaining supply if unresolved breastfeeding issues are continuing

  • Baby is pre-term, unwell or separated from mum

  • If there are other health concerns that may contribute to breastfeeding difficulties

  • There may be other reasons a hospital grade pump may be preferable

Hospital grade breast pumps have generally been found to be much more capable of removing your milk quickly and more effectively than small personal use pumps during the time-sensitive stages of breastmilk production. Hospital grade pumps with their robust motors are safe, comfortable and commonly yield greater volumes of milk. Families have found that hospital grade pumps also make expressing sessions less time-consuming and labour-intensive
